Pell City is a small town about thirty miles due east of Birmingham, along I-20, for years the most dangerous stretch of roadway in the state. The five musical pieces that form "In Pell City" are in collaboration with and response to Linda Frost’s "The Pell City Poems." Having grown up just beyond the police jurisdiction,the outsider’s point-of-view in Frost’s poems reminded me that the closest places can sometimes be the least familiar. The synthesizer employs three different timbres (in ABCBA form), and is detuned by 20 cents throughout.
